Boston

October 12th, 2009

An early morning view of the city from the 16th floor of our hotel, looking east from Stuart and Charles (Stuart Street is going from bottom left up toward the center; Charles Street across the bottom). Eliot Norton Park visible at the far right edge; the State House barely visible on the left.

Nice, France

September 25th, 2009

A flower market near where we had lunch. Note that some dude managed to appear twice in this picture.

Place du Palais de Justice.

Place Massena: a big city square by the Avenue Jean Médecin. The Mediterranean is a couple of blocks beyond the fountain at the end of the square (in the center of the scene).

Monte Carlo, Monaco

September 25th, 2009

Monaco is tiny, and you can see almost all of it in this scene (though unfortunately the photo is dominated by an ugly roof). Note the construction everywhere, mostly of fairly boring apartment buildings; and the castle, on at outcropping in the right half of the picture. Near the middle of the scene, the harbor is packed with boats: we happened to arrive in the middle of the Monaco Yacht Show.

A random street scene at the Boulevard de la Princess Charlotte. Right down the center of the scene, past the fountain, is the famous Monaco Casino.

Pisa, Italy

September 24th, 2009

Of course everyone comes to Pisa to see the Leaning Tower, but that's actually the least impressive building in the Piazza. This scene shows the interior of the Duomo (cathedral), standing in the transept, facing down the nave. The altar was directly behind me, so in the photo it's at the extreme left and right edges. The seven hundred year old pulpit dominates the right half of the scene.

Piazza del Duomo. Again, you can see that the Tower is a relatively minor part of the whole.

Sorrento, Italy

September 22nd, 2009

The marina from the top of the "200 stairs" (more like 100) required to get into town from the water.

This courtyard doubles as a gallery for local artists.

Fort Gorges

September 13th, 2009

Three views taken from Fort Gorges in Casco Bay.

Casco Bay

August 28th, 2009

On a sunset sailing cruise for a friend's birthday. Views of the Eastern Prom (a neighborhood by downtown Portland) and the Spring Point Ledge lighthouse.

Cliff House Beach

August 16th, 2009

This small beach a few blocks away from our house is usually empty, perhaps because it's shady and cool. This day was among the hottest of the summer, so a bunch of people came down to escape the heat.

South Portland

August 8th, 2009

The view of the harbor from our table at the Saltwater Grille.

Scarborough Beach

Fort Williams

January 19th, 2009

A cold, clear day following one with several inches of fluffy snow. In the top picture, Eva, Grayson, Becca, Jack, and Liza are visible at the center.
